The Best Places for Family Photos in Tacoma, WA

Looking for the perfect location for family photos in Tacoma? One of my favorite things about photographing families in the Pacific Northwest is that we don’t have to go far to find beautiful scenery.

From rolling grass hills and wooded trails to quiet beaches and gorgeous sunset views, Tacoma has so many wonderful places to create photographs that feel natural, meaningful, and uniquely yours.

As a Tacoma family photographer, I love choosing locations that give families room to explore, kids space to be themselves, and everyone a chance to enjoy the experience rather than simply stand still and smile at the camera.

Here are four of my favorite Tacoma-area locations for family photos!

1. Chambers Bay

BEST FOR: Open views, golden light, and sweeping scenery

Chambers Bay is one of my favorite locations for family photos in Tacoma, and for good reason. With rolling grass hills, beautiful views, and access to the beach, it offers a gorgeous mix of scenery in one location.

The open landscape is especially beautiful during golden hour, when the light stretches across the hills and creates that warm, dreamy glow I love.

It’s a wonderful option for families who want a little variety in their gallery, with room for playful moments, relaxed portraits, and photographs that make the landscape part of the story.

2. Fort Steilacoom Park

BEST FOR: Playful families, wooded scenery, and room to explore

If you love the idea of family photos surrounded by nature but want something relaxed and accessible, Fort Steilacoom Park is a fantastic choice.

The park offers open fields, wooded trails, and plenty of space for kids to run, explore, and just be kids. The variety of scenery also makes it easy to create a gallery with different looks without needing an elaborate location.

This is one of my favorite options for families who want their session to feel playful and laid-back, with plenty of opportunities for genuine connection and those little in-between moments.

3. Van Lierop Park

BEST FOR: Spring color and something a little different

Van Lierop Park is a beautiful option for spring family photos, especially when the lupines are blooming.

The seasonal color adds something special to photographs, creating a lovely setting for families who want a little more color and a distinctly springtime feel.

Because the lupines are seasonal, timing matters if this is the look you’re dreaming of. If you’re considering spring photos here, I can help you plan around the season and find the best opportunity for your session.

4. Saltar’s Point Beach

BEST FOR: Waterfront scenery, driftwood, and a relaxed beach feel

For families who love the water, Saltar’s Point offers a beautiful beach setting with a different feel from Tacoma’s grassy parks.

The shoreline and driftwood create natural texture and interest, while the beach setting is perfect for relaxed, playful photographs. Think little ones exploring, parents snuggling their kids, and everyone enjoying a bit of time together by the water.

Beach sessions are especially lovely when the light begins to soften toward evening, giving the photographs a dreamy, natural feel.

Which Tacoma location is right for your family?

The best location depends on the kind of photographs you love and what would make your family feel most comfortable.

  • Love open views and golden light? Chambers Bay might be your spot.
  • Want room for kids to run and explore? Consider Fort Steilacoom Park.
  • Dreaming of colorful spring photos? Van Lierop Park is worth considering when the lupines bloom.
  • Love the beach and waterfront scenery? Salter’s Point could be the perfect fit.

And these are just a few of the possibilities! We can choose a location based on your family’s personality, the season, the scenery you love, and the overall feel you want for your photographs.

You don’t need perfectly behaved kids or a plan for what to do in front of the camera. My sessions are relaxed and lightly guided, with plenty of room for movement, connection, and the moments that unfold naturally.
