If you’re dreaming of family photos surrounded by beautiful scenery, soft natural light, and plenty of room for your kids to simply be kids, Discovery Park is one of my favorite places for family photography in Seattle. It’s also a stunning, romantic location for couples and engagement photos!
Tucked away in the Magnolia neighborhood, Discovery Park feels like a little escape from the city. With winding trails, open meadows, abundant sweet pea blooms, towering trees, and sweeping views of Puget Sound, it offers so much variety without needing to travel far. And for the kind of photography I love most? It’s pretty hard to beat.

A little bit of everything, all in one place
One of my favorite things about Discovery Park is how naturally the landscape changes as you explore. We can wander through grassy fields, dance and snuggle among the sweet pea flowers, find beautiful pockets of light beneath the trees, and take in the Puget Sound and distant Olympic Mountains scenery along the way. That variety gives your gallery a lovely mix of images without making your session feel rushed or overly planned. Some photographs might feel open and airy, while others are a little more intimate and tucked away.
It’s also a beautiful setting throughout the year. Spring brings fresh greenery, summer offers lush fields of flowers, golden grass, and long evenings, and fall can bring a softer, moodier feel to the trails and meadows.
No two sessions look exactly alike, and that’s part of the magic.

A beautiful setting for real family moments
Here’s the thing about family photos: I don’t want you to spend your entire session wondering whether everyone is smiling at the camera. I want you to have space to connect. Discovery Park gives us room to walk and explore together, let little hands find yours and little feet run and play, share a few laughs, snuggle tired toddlers, and pause when the light falls just right. I’ll gently guide you along the way, but there’s no need to make every moment look perfect.
Some of my favorite photographs happen in between the moments you might expect to be photographed. A quick hug, a little one reaching for your hand, or the way your family naturally gathers together can become the images you treasure most.
The scenery is beautiful, of course. But the connection you share is what makes your photographs yours.

Is Discovery Park good for families with young kids?
Absolutely! Discovery Park can be a wonderful location for families with young children, especially when we keep the session relaxed and plan around your family’s needs.
There are trails and stretches of open space to explore, but the park is large, and some routes involve more walking or uneven terrain than others. We’ll choose a meeting spot and route that make sense for your family, your children’s ages, and the kind of scenery you love. You don’t need kids who sit still, perfectly coordinated outfits, or a plan to make everyone behave for an hour. We’ll leave room for movement, curiosity, snack breaks, and the occasional toddler detour.
If you’re worried about how your little ones will do, you’re not alone. My approach is designed to help everyone feel comfortable, with gentle guidance and plenty of opportunities to simply enjoy being together.
When is the best time for Discovery Park photos?
I love planning outdoor sessions around the quality of the light, especially in the hours leading up to sunset. The softer light can add warmth and dimension to the landscape while creating that dreamy, cinematic feeling I love in my work.
Seattle weather can be unpredictable, so we’ll also consider the season, the forecast, and your family’s schedule when choosing a date and time. While I love golden hour, you don’t need a perfectly sunny day for beautiful photographs! Overcast skies can create lovely, soft light and ambiance.

Let’s make something beautiful together!
If you’re looking for a Seattle family photographer who values genuine connection, playful moments, and photographs that feel like your family, I’d love to help you plan a session at Discovery Park. Likewise, if you’re looking for cinematic, romantic photos for you and your partner, Discovery Park is my favorite Seattle location for couples photos!
We’ll choose a setting that feels right for you, talk through wardrobe and styling, and make a plan that gives you room to relax and enjoy the experience.
The goal isn’t to create a picture-perfect version of your family. It’s to preserve this season of life in a way that feels honest, meaningful, and beautifully alive.
